As trend wanes, Vegas casinos fold on poker rooms

(AP) ? The Tropicana hoped to step back into the big leagues when it opened its poker room in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, touting it as the coolest in town.

But that same morning, federal agents shut down the three biggest online poker sites on the Internet. Last September, less than a year and a half later, the iconic casino quietly swapped out its green felt tables for slot machines.

It's a story that's become increasingly common as the crackdown on Internet gambling weakens pokers' appeal, and the casinos that once competed to lure fans of Texas Hold 'Em abandon the waning game in favor of more lucrative alternatives.

Poker has never been a big moneymaker like slot machines or roulette. But when the game's popularity soared during the 2000s, casinos were willing to forgo the extra dollars to get players inside their buildings.

Now the calculus is shifting. In Sin City, epicenter of the poker craze, at least eight rooms have folded in the past two years. The trend is also playing out in Mississippi riverboats, Indian casinos and gambling halls near big cities from California to Florida.

Poker's proponents insist the game remains as popular as ever, and some larger casinos say their rooms are bustling.

In a statement this month announcing the World Series of Poker lineup, executive director Ty Stewart said the summer bonanza in Las Vegas would be an "affirmation about the strength and global appeal of the game."

But the spate of poker room closures on the Strip has some wondering whether the largest gambling trend to sweep the country in 25 years may be losing momentum.

"I just think the allure of poker is lessening," said William Thompson, author of the encyclopedia "Gambling in America" and professor of public administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "That's one reason the smaller casinos would just say, 'Hey it's not worth all the time to set everything up. A slot machine would do a lot better.'"

Poker revenue has been falling in Nevada since 2007, the year after the federal government first cracked down on virtual gambling and forced online companies to close or relocate offshore.

The recession hobbled casinos across the board, but while winnings from other games began to pick back up in 2010, poker revenue continues to slump by an average of 6 percent a year, according to annual reports from the state Gaming Control Board.

Poker revenues stacked up to $123 million last year, down from a high of $168 million in 2007.

Entries in the World Series of Poker's main event also took tumble in 2007, falling by 28 percent from a high of 8,773. Entries have only topped 7,000 once in the years since.

On April 15, 2011, the federal government took its strongest stand yet against the semi-legal world of internet poker, blacking out three major sites on a date later dubbed "Black Friday."

No longer could fresh crops of poker players develop their games online.

The Tropicana hotel-resort, which was remaking itself with several major renovations at the time, opened its new poker room the same spring day.

"Poker had gone through a dramatic popularity phase. It grew really quickly. And we jumped on board," said Fred Harmon, chief marketing officer for the casino that sits on a busy Strip intersection opposite the MGM Grand and New York New York.

The decision to replace the room with slot machines last fall was pure economics, Harmon said.

"I think every company over the last several years have had to look at what they do and what makes money," he said.

Casinos across the country are making the same calculation.

Sam's Town in Tunica, Mississippi, closed its poker room in January, citing the economy. The Seminole Casino Hollywood near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., replaced its room with slots in September.

Indian casinos in states like Minnesota and the Dakotas are also pulling their rooms, according to marketing consultant Theron "Scarlet Raven" Thompson.

"What you're seeing is the mom and pop-sized poker rooms are closing. The larger properties are monopolizing the poker crowd," he said.

Several smaller Las Vegas casinos decided they no longer wanted to bet on the game in 2012, including Ellis Island, which closed its room just two months after opening it. Casino bosses also removed rooms from the Silverton south of the Strip, Aliante to the north, and Fitzgerald's, which eliminated its room when it rebranded as the D.

The Gold Coast, the Plaza and Tuscany casinos closed their rooms in 2011.

Poker has never been a high-profit game for casinos is because players exchange money with each other, not the house. Rooms must employ a dealer for every table and can only collect portion of what players put down, usually about 5 percent.

Yet at the height of the craze, casinos scrambled to install rooms for a new generation of fans.

The game's meteoric run is generally attributed to the rise of Internet gambling, new technology that let viewers see player's hidden cards in televised tournaments and a watershed moment during the 2003 World Series of Poker when an amateur with the unlikely name Chris Moneymaker claimed the $2.5 million first prize in front of a million television viewers.

After Moneymaker's win, the MGM Grand on the Las Vegas Strip reopened its poker room, which had been closed for years, and Caesars Palace announced plans to open its first room in more than a decade. The Venetian followed suit in 2006.

Mega-casinos continue to invest in the game. The Venetian added 17 tables to its room in September, making it the biggest game in town, Caesars Entertainment added a slot-style progressive jackpot element to its games earlier this year, and the expansive room at the Bellagio is still packed most nights.

Venetian poker director Kathy Raymond said the expansion, which was part of a larger casino floor renovation, has drawn more players to the already popular room.

"I think that the love people have for poker hasn't subsided," she said. "It may be part of the economic environment, but I don't think the interest has subsided at all."

She acknowledged that smaller casinos are struggling to claim their piece of the market.

"You really need volume to operate a successful poker room," she said. "The overhead can't be absorbed by just a few tables."

In the end, the very thing that made poker so appealing ? its air of tradition and class ? may be its undoing, at least on the gambling floor, William Thompson said. After all, casinos make their billions by giving people new and stimulating ways to lose money.

While slot machine developers can roll out a new "Family Guy" or "oodles of poodles" game ever few months, poker remains unchanged.

"With slot machines, you can keep reinventing them, so it's going to last longer. They're throwing new wrinkles in all the time," he said.

(AP) ? The Obama administration said Thursday that it will provide the Syrian opposition with an additional $60 million in assistance and ? in a significant policy shift ? will for the first time provide nonlethal aid like food and medical supplies directly to rebels battling to oust President Bashar Assad.

The move was announced by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at an international conference on Syria in Rome, and several European nations are expected in the coming days to take similar steps in working with the military wing of the opposition in order to ramp up pressure on Assad to step down and pave the way for a democratic transition.

"We do this because we need to stand on the side of those in this fight who want to see Syria rise again and see democracy and human rights," Kerry said. "The stakes are really high, and we can't risk letting this country in the heart of the Middle East being destroyed by vicious autocrats or hijacked by the extremists."

"No nation, no people should live in fear of their so-called leaders," he said, adding that President Barack Obama's "decision to take further steps now is the result of the brutality of superior armed force propped up by foreign fighters from Iran and Hezbollah."

Kerry and senior officials from 11 countries most active in calling for Assad to leave said in a joint statement released by the Italian foreign ministry that they had agreed in Rome on "the need to change the balance of power on the ground." It said the countries represented "will coordinate their efforts closely so as to best empower the Syrian people and support the Supreme Military Command of the Free Syrian Army in its efforts to help them exercise self-defense."

Britain and France, two countries that Kerry visited before Italy on his first official trip as secretary of state, have signaled that they want to begin supplying the rebels with defensive military equipment such as combat body armor, armored vehicles, night vision goggles and training. They are expected to make decisions on those items in the near future in line with new guidance from the European Union, which still bars the provision of weapons and ammunition to anyone in Syria.

"We must go above and beyond the efforts we are making now," said Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, who hosted the conference. "We can no longer allow this massacre to continue."

Appearing beside Terzi and Kerry, the leader of the Syrian opposition coalition, Mouaz al-Khatib, delivered a forceful and emotional demand for Assad to stop the brutality of his forces that have in recent days launched scud missile attacks on the city of Aleppo that have been roundly condemned by much of the Western and Arab worlds

"Bashar Assad, for once in your life, behave as a human being," Khatib said. "Bashar Assad, you have to make at least one wise decision in your life for the future of your country."

The opposition has been appealing for some time for the international community to boost its support and to provide its military wing with lethal assistance, and while al-Khatib did not mention those requests, he pointedly made no reference to the new assistance that Kerry announced. Instead, he urged outside nations to support the creation of protected humanitarian corridors inside Syria, which the foreign ministers said they had "positively considered" by made no decisions.

Kerry defended the limited U.S. assistance, saying it was just part of what was being offered and that other countries would fill in any gaps. He said he was confident that the "totality" of the aid should be enough to prod Assad to start changing his calculations on remaining in power.

"We're doing this, but other countries are doing other things," he replied, without going into specifics. "I am confident the totality of this effort is going to have an impact on the ability of the Syrian opposition to accomplish its goals." Kerry said Thursday's meeting in Rome marked the "beginning of a process that will in fact change his (Assad's) calculation."

Washington has already provided $385 million in humanitarian aid to Syria's war-weary population and $54 million in communications equipment, medical supplies and other nonlethal assistance to Syria's political opposition. The U.S. also has screened rebel groups for Turkey and American allies in the Arab world that have armed rebel fighters.

But until now, no U.S. dollars or provisions have gone directly to rebel fighters, reflecting concerns about forces that have allied themselves with more radical Islamic elements since Assad's initial crackdown on peaceful protesters in March 2011.

The $60 million in new aid to the political opposition is intended to help the opposition govern newly liberated areas of Syria by aiding in the delivery of services and improving rule of law and human rights as well as to blunt the influence of extremists who have made inroads in some places.

The rations and medical supplies for the fighters will be delivered to the military council for distribution only to carefully vetted members of the Free Syrian Army, U.S. officials said.

The U.S. will be sending technical advisers to the Syrian National Coalition offices in Cairo to oversee and help them spend the money for good governance and rule of law. The advisers will be from non-governmental organizations and other groups that do this kind of work.

The foreign ministers' presentation was disrupted by one protester who called on them to "stop supporting terrorists."

EA preps 'single identity' system to bridge gaming experiences across platforms

Now that EA has gotten Origin for both Windows and Mac under its belt, it's clued GamesBeat into its plans for a cross-platform account system that's taken 1,500 engineers 18 months to build. With the "single identity" solution, gamers can play games tied to their accounts, find friends currently online and join up for multiplayer, message fellow users and access save states across platforms ranging from consoles and smartphones to tablets and social networks. Of course, the business side comes into play too: by keeping tabs on users, Electronic Arts could make better game recommendations and boost its marketing's effectiveness. As of now, there's no word on when the system will find its way into your gaming.

Detainees released: Could that hurt immigration reform?

Hundreds of immigration detainees deemed low risk have been released ? part of a national game of chicken over the 'sequester.? But the move could have consequences for immigration reform.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / February 27, 2013

Citing impending budget cuts, immigration officials have announced the release of hundreds of detainees considered low-level threats to public safety. This move by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has quickly turned into one of the most baffling chapters in the public-relations chess match going on between House Republicans and the Obama White House over the looming ?sequester.?

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The release of detainees may score some short-term points for President Obama, who has been sending dire warnings about the impact of the cuts, including with a speech Tuesday at a Virginia shipyard. But the GOP could also strike a chord with Americans by highlighting security concerns and other issues posed by the release.

And such concerns could bring into play even more than the fight over federal spending, deficits, and the debt. Namely, the release of detainees could also affect the debate over comprehensive immigration reform.

That's important because the GOP's political future may in part be staked on potential gains that the party can make with Hispanic voters. Mr. Obama, too, could lose a lot if immigration reform falters.

"It's natural that people in a federal organization are going to take this chance to prove how important they are to the public, especially as that goal is aligned with a White House trying to raise the ante" over the spending cuts, says Allert Brown-Gort, an immigration expert at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. "But," he adds, "this also points to some of the questions around the immigration bill right now," including how serious the government is about securing the US-Mexico border.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the release came as ICE prepared for the sequester, which is set to kick in Friday and which mandates automatic cuts from nearly all corners of the federal bureaucracy, including ICE's $2.05 billion budget. In announcing the release, ICE insisted that the government is not dropping these deportation cases.

"The agency released these low-risk, noncriminal detainees under a less expensive form of monitoring to ensure detention levels stayed within ICE's overall budget," White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday, insisting that the White House was not involved in the decision.

Next-generation services to boost economic development efforts in Iraq through the delivery of high-speed Internet access, high-definition video content and advanced online business applications

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Regional Telecom, a communications service provider in Northern Iraq, are to launch the nation?s first 4G LTE network, providing the region with lightning-fast wireless broadband services including high-definition video streaming, high-speed Internet access and a range of business serv ices.

The new network will be the first in Iraq to offer large-scale wireless broadband services, helping in the restoration of the nation?s communication infrastructure impacted by the tough times of political unrest.

The network will provide significant support to ongoing efforts to revive the Iraqi economy, bringing levels of connectivity needed for business, public sector and consumer applications.

Kawa Junad, Chairman of Regional Telecom, said: ?Broadband services are the lifeblood of the modern digital economy, but Iraq has been without widely available broadband for more than a decade, in effect cutting off the country, our businesses and our citizens from the rest of the world. The introduction of 4G LTE services in Northern Iraq promises to change that, making a significant contribution to the country?s efforts to rejoin the global community.?

For the project, Alcatel-Lucent is providing its industry-leading end-to-end 4G LTE solution, including base stations, IP mobile backhaul for 4G LTE and existing 3G CDMA traffic, Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and elements of its platforms, which will allow Regional Telecom to introduce a rich portfolio of advanced IP-based services.

At the same time we are also bringing broadband services to underserved regions to help promote economic growth and drive new business opportunities.?

As global demand for Internet services continues to rise, Alcatel-Lucent is providing operators such as Regional Telecom with a clear, efficient broadband evolution path. Alcatel-Lucent?s innovative lightRadio? portfolio is designed with this in mind, and provides a framework for wireless networks that offer lightning fast data speeds while reducing operating costs and power consumption.

Why Did You Get Married? | Black and Married With Kids.com - A ...

Money?

Some people choose their spouse according to the amount of money they earn. That person ranks financial security at the top of their list of desired qualities in a mate. The money person may feel as long as he or she has the money to live comfortably and buy the things they want, when they want, their goal has been achieved. He or she may feel financial security is better than love because love cannot pay bills. If marrying for money is the primary goal, that person may not care if their spouse spends the majority of the time at work to provide the lifestyle they wanted in the first place. What happens when that person loses their job and can no longer provide the plush lifestyle?

Children?

Some people marry because they are about to become parents or are already parents. They may feel that marrying the other parent is the honorable and correct thing to do. Some people feel the children should live with both parents even if the parents do not love each other. Sometimes the parents can be pressured from family or even the other parent to marry. Marrying for the children can cause undue stress in the household and may prevent the parents from finding and marrying someone they truly love. What happens if depression creeps in because of the burden of marrying for the kids?

Love?

Some people marry their spouse because they love them and want to build a life together. They may feel that as long as they love each other, all will be well. The mates that marry for love may feel that marriage is the next logical step in their relationship. Once married, the couple may want to start growing their family by having children, some may chose not to have any children at all. When someone marries for love, they may believe that their spouse is their soul mate and there is no one else they want to spend their life with. What happens when the love is no longer felt?

No matter what your reason for getting married, keep God first. If you want the marriage to work despite the circumstances, it is going to take prayer and commitment. To the one who married for money; the bible says that God gives the ability to obtain wealth, and that He will supply all of your needs according to His riches and glory. To the one who married for the kids; the bible says to keep your mind stayed on Jesus and He will keep you in perfect peace. To the one who married for love; the bible says not to get weary in your well doing, because in due season, you will obtain what you want if you don?t give up. The bible has many ?apps? for different issues you may face in your marriage. Do not give up and do not condemn yourself for your reasons for getting married. God is for marriage and no matter the circumstances surrounding it, remember with God all things are possible.

BMWK ? Money, kids, and love are only a few examples of reasons for getting married; what was yours?

The New VW Golf GTI is Better in Every Way

Within the past year or two, performance-minded hatchbacks blew up in the U.S. The Fiat 500's American introduction served as a quasi-litmus test for the segment as a whole, and now even GM and Ford have brought their own souped-up subcompacts stateside.

But the progenitor of all this hot hatch hullabaloo in the U.S is the one against which all others are measured: the 1983 VW Rabbit GTI. And ahead of the Geneva Motor Show, today Volkswagen released the vitals on the next generation of its high-performance hatch: the 2014 Golf GTI Mk VII.

The 2014 features an upgraded version of the Audi-engineered EA888 2.0-liter turbo-four engine found in the every VW since 2008, with a welcome bump in power. The new GTI puts out 220 hp, up 20 from the last-gen GTI, and 230 with an optional performance pack. The 258 lb-ft of torque is available at a surprising 1500 rpm and totals an increase of 57 over the last generation. The GTI has never been faster off the line (excluding the one-off W12 and R models) than it is now, dealing with 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds, 0.3 faster than last year's model. It will go on on to hit 153 mph.?In addition to being quicker, the GTI is more efficient, based on European standards it gets an estimated 39.2 combined mpg (though that number will probably be lower with EPA testing). That's a feat achieved in part by shedding nearly 60 pounds.

Styling-wise, the MK VII GTI is almost identical to the new Golf GTD announced last week. The only differences are the GTI's iconic red stripe across the grille, "Clark" tartan-patterned seats, its 17-inch "Brooklyn" alloys, and a GTI-braded "sport" steering wheel, shifter knob, instrument cluster, and other interior accents.

However, it's important to note that the performance figures are for the European version. While the U.S.-bound GTI should be identical in appearance?with even more standard equipment?the two cars may differ slightly in engine power due to fuel differences between the continents. For reference, this year's 2013 GTI is slightly more powerful (7 hp) than its American counterpart. In addition, it's still up in the air if options like the performance pack?including a horsepower boost and a mechanical limited-slip differential?and summer tires, which are standard overseas, will be open to American buyers.

Europeans will get their hands on the 2014 GTI this May, to the tune of 28,350 Euros. We get to wait until next year here in the States. No word on price yet, but one thing is for certain: The new GTI is a step up in every way.

UFC 157?s Three Stars: Ronda Rousey, Robbie Lawler and Dennis Bermudez shine

UFC 157 completed the rare trick of living up to its intense hype. Who stood out as stars?

No. 1 star ? Ronda Rousey: Is there any better word to describe Rousey than star? After months of Rousey appearing on television, in magazines and on every site on the internet, she showed she's more than a media darling. Rousey not only escaped a submission attempt by Liz Carmouche, but also finished the fight with just 11 seconds to go in the first round. That's a star.

No. 2 star ? Robbie Lawler: Looking at this fight card, would you ever have guessed that Lawler would emerge as a star? Before returning to the UFC on Saturday, he lost three of his last five bouts. He was up against Josh Koscheck, who was eager to get a big win after losing to Johny Hendricks. But the power in Lawler's hands knocked Koscheck out in the first round, and earned Lawler a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.

No. 3 star ? Dennis Bermudez: When the preliminary fights started, the Honda Center wasn't even half full. The UFC's tailgate was still going strong in the parking lot. But as Bermudez's bout with Matt Grice wore on, I noticed the stands filling up. Perhaps they heard about the Fight of the Year candidate happening inside, with Bermudez throwing everything he had at Grice, and Grice not only withstanding the punches but coming back with big punches of his own. They each took home a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

Who were your three stars from the night? Tell in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Budget: Changes in property tax rates and more wage support ...

Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam announced the Budget for 2013 on Monday. Here is a summary of some of the main changes:

MEASURES AFFECTING HOUSEHOLDS

Payouts

The Government will double the total payouts for utilities rebates, Central Provident Fund (CPF) Medisave accounts and Goods and Services Tax (GST) vouchers this year.

On top of the permanent GST voucher payout, there will be an extra GST voucher. That means all eligible Singaporeans will get double the usual amount.

This will benefit about 1.4 million Singaporeans, costing the Government an extra S$680 million.

There will also be a one-off S$200 top-up to Medisave accounts of all Singaporeans aged 45 and above, benefitting 1.5 million Singaporeans.

Foreign Domestic Worker Levy

To help families who hire foreign domestic workers to care for young children, seniors and dependents with disabilities, there will be a cut on the concessionary foreign domestic worker levy from S$170 to S$120 a month from 1 March 2013. This will benefit about 122,000 households. The non-concessionary levy is $265 a month.

Cars

The existing Additional Registration Fee (ARF) paid by car buyers is 100 per cent of the car?s open market value (OMV). This will be replaced by a tiered structure, where more expensive cars will yield higher rates.

- An economy passenger car with an OMV of up to S$20,000 will see no change in ARF rate.

- A car with an OMV of up to S$50,000 will pay up to S$12,000, or 24 per cent more ARF.

- A luxury car with an OMV of S$75,000 will pay S$32,000, or 43 per cent more ARF

The tiered ARF structure will apply to vehicles registered with Certificates of Entitlement (COEs) obtained from the first COE bidding exercise in March 2013

Personal Income Tax

- A 30-per-cent tax rebate for resident taxpayers aged below 60 (as at 31 December 2012), capped at S$1,500.

- A 50-per-cent tax rebate for those aged 60 and above (as at 31 December 2012), capped at S$1,500.

Property Tax

Changes in property tax rates will be done over two years, starting 1 January 2014, with revised rates taking full effect from 1 January 2015.

For owner-occupied properties, the property tax will be lower, except for the one per cent of top-end homes. The 99 per cent of homes (about 950,000 properties) with an annual value of less than S$59,000 will enjoy tax savings of up to S$80. The savings will cut the Government?s property tax revenue by S$44 million.

- All one-room and two-room Housing Board (HDB) flat owners do not need to pay tax while living in the flats.

- Those living in a five-room HDB flat valued at S$12,000 a year, for example, will pay S$160 tax, down from S$240 (a 33-per-cent drop).

- Those living in a landed property in the central area valued at S$150,000 a year, for example, will pay S$12,580 tax, up from S$7,460 (a 69-per-cent increase).

(Table: Budget 2013 media release)

For non-owner-occupied investment properties, there will be an increase in property tax rates. The increase is biggeest for top-end homes.?

- In an estimated example, the owner of a landed property in the central area with an annual value of S$150,000 will pay a tax of S$24,000, up from the current S$15,000 (a 60-per-cent increase).?

- For a suburban condominium valued at S$35,000 a year, the property tax will go up an estimated three per cent from S$3,500 to S$3,600.

- For a five-room Housing Board (HDB) flat valued at S$12,000 a year, the property tax is estimated at S$1,200 and there will be no increase.

(Table: Budget 2013 media release)

Education Support

The Government will double spending on preschool sector over the next five years to more than S$3 billion. These include scholarships and salary and training grants for teachers, providing more places for children by 2017, and building more centres closer to homes and workplaces.

To help disadvantaged students, the Government will extend the learning support programme beyond the early primary school years, which will need about 600 extra specially-trained teachers.

The number of school-based student-care centres in primary schools will be expanded to give extra development support outside school hours.

Support for Seniors

The Government will give subsidies for a wider range of devices such as motorised wheelchairs, shower chairs and hearing aids for low- to middle-income seniors to help them stay active and independent.

There will be also be subsidies for healthcare products such as milk feeds and diapers for low-income seniors living at home.

The funding will increase from the current S$10 million to S$50 million.

MEASURES AFFECTING BUSINESSES / WORKFORCE

Foreign Worker Policies

The Government will raise foreign worker levies for all sectors, including construction and manufacturing.

It will also tighten eligibility requirements for S Pass and Employment Pass applicants, such as the qualifying salary.

Income Support

The Workfare Income Supplement scheme has been around to supplement the wages and retirement savings of older low-wage workers and to encourage them to stay employed.

The monthly income ceiling for those who can be covered by this scheme is now raised from S$1,700 to S$1,900. The payouts will benefit about 480,000 Singaporeans or 30 per cent of the citizen workforce.

Workers will now get a higher cash payout ? with 40 per cent in cash (up from 29 per cent) and 60 per cent through CPF. For example, a 60-year-old worker earning S$1,000 a month will get a yearly payout of S$3,500, of which S$1,400 will be paid in cash.

The Government will tighten the eligibility criteria for this scheme to exclude any worker whose spouse earns more than S$70,000 a year, and individuals or couples who own a second property.

For CPF contribution rates, workers earning S$1,500 or less will see the employer and employee contribution rates fully restored from 1 January 2014.

For example, the employer contribution rate of a 45-year-old earning S$800 a month will be restored from 11 to 16 per cent, and his or her employee contribution rate restored from 16.5 to 20 per cent.

Business Support

There will be S$5.3 billion worth of support to businesses.

For the next three years under the Wage Credit Scheme, the Government will co-fund 40 per cent of wage increases for Singaporean employees who earn a gross monthly income of up to S$4,000. The co-funding payout will be to employers.

For example, if an employer increases the gross monthly wage of his employee by S$200 in 2013, the Government will co-fund 40 per cent of this S$200 increase and also for the next two years if the increase is?sustained. The scheme will cost the Government S$3.6 billion over three years.

There will be a corporate income tax rebate of 30 per cent, capped at S$30,000 per year, for years of assessment 2013 to 2015. This is to help companies cope with cost pressures.

Road Tax

There will be a one-year 30-per-cent road tax rebate for good vehicles, buses and taxis to take effect from 1 July 2013.

Certificate of Entitlement (COE)

Owners of commercial vehicles who want to renew the COEs for their vehicles for five years ? when renewal is due at the end of 10 years ? may choose to extend it for another five years. (Right now, they cannot do so or have to pay more for a 10-year renewal.)

Researchers at The Johns Hopkins University and Yale University have discovered that a specialized receptor, normally found in the nose, is also in blood vessels throughout the body, sensing small molecules created by microbes that line mammalian intestines, and responding to these molecules by increasing blood pressure. The finding suggests that gut bacteria are an integral part of the body's complex system for maintaining a stable blood pressure.

A description of the research, conducted in mice and test tubes, appeared online Feb. 11 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The contribution that gut microbes apparently make to blood pressure regulation and human health is a surprise," says Jennifer Pluznick, Ph.D., assistant professor of physiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "There is still much to learn about this mechanism, but we now know some of the players and how they interact," she adds.

Pluznick says that several years ago, thanks to a "happy coincidence," she found in the kidney some of the same odor-sensing proteins that give the nose its powers. Focusing on one of those proteins, olfactory receptor 78 (Olfr78), her team specifically located it in the major branches of the kidney's artery and in the smaller arterioles that lead into the kidney's filtering structures. Olfr78 also turned up in the walls of small blood vessels throughout the body, she says, particularly in the heart, diaphragm, skeletal muscle and skin.

To figure out which molecules bind and activate Olfr78, the scientists programmed cells to have Olfr78 protein receptors on their surface. They also gave these same cells the ability to start a light-producing chemical reaction whenever Olfr78 is activated. By adding different cocktails of molecules to the cells and measuring the light the cells produced, they homed in on a single mixture that activated Olfr78. They then tested each component in that mix and found that only acetic acid (a.k.a. vinegar) bound Olfr78 and caused the reaction.

Acetic acid and its alter ego, acetate, are part of a group of molecules known as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). When the team tested other molecules in this group, they found that propionate, which is similar to acetate, also binds Olfr78. In the body of mammals, including humans, SCFAs are made when zillions of bacteria lining the gut digest starch and cellulose from plant-based foods. The SCFAs are absorbed by the intestines into the blood stream, where they can interact with Olfr78.

To pinpoint the effect of Olfr78, the scientists gave SCFAs to mice missing the Olfr78 gene and found that the rodents' blood pressure decreased, suggesting that SCFAs normally induce Olfr78 to elevate blood pressure. However, when they gave SCFAs to normal mice with intact Olfr78, they did not see the expected increase in blood pressure, but rather a decrease, though it was less pronounced than before.

To test the effect of reducing the SCFAs available to Olfr78, the team gave mice a three-week course of antibiotics to wipe out the gut microbes responsible for SCFA production. In this case, normal mice showed very little change in blood pressure, but mice without Olfr78 experienced an increase in blood pressure, suggesting that there were other factors involved in the Olfr78/SCFA/blood pressure relationship.

The mystery was solved, Pluznick says, when the team examined mice lacking Gpr41, a non-smell-related protein receptor located in blood vessel walls that also binds SCFAs. When SCFAs bind to Gpr41, blood pressure is decreased. The researchers eventually discovered that Olfr78 and Gpr41 both are activated by SCFAs, but with contradictory effects. The negative effect of Gpr41 is counterbalanced by the positive effect of Olfr78, but Gpr41's effect is stronger, so an increase in SCFAs produces an overall decrease in blood pressure.

"We don't have the full story yet," says Pluznick. "There are many players involved in the maintenance of stable levels of blood pressure, and these are just a few of them. We don't know why it would be beneficial for blood pressure to decrease after eating or why gut microbes would play a part in signaling that change. But our work opens the door for exploring the effects of antibiotic treatments, probiotics and other dietary changes on blood pressure levels in mice, and perhaps eventually people."

FlaccoGetty Images

If the Ravens want to make Joe Flacco the highest paid quarterback in the NFL, and if Flacco is satisfied to barely clear the bar set last year by Saints quarterback Drew Brees, there?s a quick and easy way to get this contract done.

Using Brees? 2012 contract as the starting point, Flacco would get a $40 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $5 million in 2013, and base salaries of $10 million in 2014, $13 million in 2015, $15 million in 2016, and $18 million in 2017.

Under the rules of signing-bonus proration, $8 million would be applied to each year?s salary cap.? That would result in a cap number of $13 million in 2013, $18 million in 2014, $21 million in 2015, $23 million in 2016, and $26 million in 2017.

It equates to a five-year payout of $101 million ? $1 million better than Brees and, for now, making Flacco the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

The two sides would have to decide whether and to what extent the money due beyond 2013 would be guaranteed, for injury only or fully.? Last year, Brees received $40 million in the first year, with $20 million guaranteed for injury only in future years.? (The injury guarantees eventually convert to full guarantees.)

The cap number in the final year would be a potential problem for the Ravens, since Flacco presumably would have one more long-term contract left before retirement.? Specifically, the $26 million cap number in 2017 would translate to a franchise tag of $31.2 million in 2018.? Thus, it would make more sense for the Ravens to tack on a sixth year at a base salary of, say, $21 million.

This would keep the average north of $20 million per year and it would give the Ravens a more manageable franchise number of $25.2 million for 2019.

Is it really that simple?? Yes, it is.? Which means that it likely won?t happen this way.

Even though it could be worked out in a matter of hours.? Or, if both sides are truly motivated, a matter of minutes.

Write Email with a Clear Chronology of Events to Keep It Short and Readable

Write Email with a Clear Chronology of Events to Keep It Short and ReadableSometimes figuring out how to structure an email so people won't ignore it is tough. If you're struggling with how to do this, Harvard Business Review suggests you lay out your emails much like a story with a clear chronology of events.

One reason people might not want to respond (or read) your email is that it's a bunch of unorganized information. The easiest way to make it more readable is to structure it like a simple story:

When a serious dispute arises at a company, the lawyers will typically ask their clients to produce a "chronology of relevant events," detailing the most important incidents leading up to the dispute. This document helps everyone involved think more clearly about how things unfolded. Try taking a similar approach when writing your e-mails. It will help you organize your thoughts into a coherent narrative. A story with a clear beginning, middle, and end will hold your readers' interest more effectively than jumbled facts interspersed with opinions.

It's simple advice, but if you're having a hard time organizing your thoughts in an email it's an approach that cuts out the fluff and gets to the point quickly. Head over to Harvard Business Review for a few more ways to improve your email writing.

Urijah Faber and Court McGee take UFC 157 wins

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Urijah Faber and Court McGee got back on the winning track at UFC 157 on Saturday.

Faber got a first-round submission win over Ivan Menjivar. Faber and Menjivar started the fight with a rolling takedown and Faber ended up on top. He worked the top position until Menjivar got back to his feet. Faber held on, and while attached to Menjivar's back, Faber swung around and sunk in a rear naked choke. Menjivar tapped at 4:34 in the first round. The Anaheim crowd erupted for "The California Kid."

It was an important win for Faber after he lost a title fight to Renan Barao in July. The win puts him at 27-6, with five of his losses coming in title fights.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

In earlier action, Court McGee punched his way to a decision win over Josh Neer. McGee used an effective strategy early on of working Josh Neer's body. Throughout the first round, Neer was hobbled by McGee's body punches. But in the second, McGee worked more on headshots. Though it wasn't as effective, McGee outstruck Neer. In the final round, McGee worked the ground game and controlled Neer while still leading on strikes. All three judges saw it 30-27 for McGee.

It was McGee's first fight at welterweight.

?I felt great at 170 lbs. This was a great move for me. I felt stronger, faster and had a lot more gas. I was told by FightMetric that I broke the record for most significant strikes ever in a welterweight fight and feel great. I could have stopped it, maybe, early with body shots but I was glad I put on a good performance.?

After the win, McGee's record is 15-3. Though he won "The Ultimate Fighter," he also lost two fights in 2012.

DNP Switched On Moving forward with leaning back

Just a few months have passed between the introduction of the Droid DNA and the new HTC One, but it seems that HTC has been turned upside down in that time. While the Droid DNA was introduced in conjunction with Verizon and can't be a wholly representative picture of how HTC might have introduced the device otherwise, it was a spec- and design-driven product -- a 5-inch, 1080p display with a 440-ppi density that appeared to spill over onto sides that included a microperforation.

In contrast, little was said about the HTC One hardware itself until later in the device's introduction, surprising because the HTC One is not only the most attractive handset the company has ever built, but also certainly one of the most attractive on the market. While it is an Android device, the casing builds upon the tapered, Windows Phone-inspired 8X, substituting aluminum for polycarbonate. That said, there is also the spillover glass effect found on the Droid DNA. The HTC One retains the 1080p display found in the Droid DNA. However, since the screen is smaller, the pixel density is even higher (468 ppi) than in that record-breaking device.

100% 56 Up

All Critics (51) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (0)

What ultimately is so compelling about 56 Up is the universality of the experiences. We were all once children. And we all will die. And in between, there is everything else.

We feel good, refreshed and depressed in watching these people get older, also embarrassed in moments and cautioned about the passage of time.

Apted, himself now in his early 70s, says he hopes to continue the series further. Long may it live.

Watching "56 Up" gives you the wonderful feeling of seeing a sociological experiment blossom into something novelistically rich and humane.

Time has been neither kind nor cruel to the 13 men and women profiled in "56 UP." It has just been time, which is what this groundbreaking series is about.

We are all older now, and this series proves it in a most deeply moving way.

Those British kids are now 56

Watching the eighth film is intriguing but, in a way, disappointing. At this point in the game, it feels as if all the characters have determined their lots in life and are simply plodding through their interviews.

Quite simply one of the great documentary projects in the history of cinema, an engrossing sociological experiment on film; and though this mostly mellow installment isn't as revelatory as some earlier ones, it's still a remarkable document.

... feels like a retrospective and summation of the whole series, with ample quotation from the previous films, an approach that makes it interesting even for viewers who haven't seen the previous installments.

A completely unique and remarkable documentary project.

Apted skillfully weaves old footage with the new, and we become poignantly aware of another factor shaping their lives (and our own): biology, as the we watch the once-cute kids grow gray and heavy.

Perhaps the boldest and probably longest running sociological experiment on film.

I think the best thing about this movie (and the entire series) is that it forces the viewer to think about their own lives. It's kind of an awakening experience.

Once again, Apted assembles a captivating documentary that's profoundly educational, essential viewing to aid the understanding of the human experience.

"56 Up" is well worth seeing.

56 Up is still moving and philosophic, though not as exciting as earlier episodes, which had more drama.

The running time is over two hours, but the lives here are richly revealed and vastly rewarding.

Apted possesses the unsettling ability to shape perceptions of their lives and personalities from inside an editing suite, a fact that the members of his flock begin to recognize at varying points throughout their adult years.
